Auld Lang Syne

Robert Burn's Auld Lang Syne is synonymous with New Year's celebrations all around the world. My favorite version of this song is sung by Scottish performer Mairi Campbell. It peaked my interest enough to do a little research about the meaning of the lyrics...

"Auld Lang Syne is one of Scotland's gifts to the world, recalling the love and kindness of days gone by, but in the communion of taking our neighbours' hands, it also gives us a sense of belonging and fellowship to take into the future."

Below I've included both the original lyrics and the translated lyrics. Happy New Year and best wishes for a bright and joyful 2013!

Original Scottish Lyrics:

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.

Chorus

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus
We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus
We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid willy waught,
For auld lang syne.
Chorus

Translated Lyrics:

Long, Long Ago

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And long, long ago.

Chorus

And for long, long ago, my dear
For long, long ago,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago

And surely you'll buy your pint-jug!
And surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago.

Chorus

We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered many the weary foot
Since long, long ago.

Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since long, long ago.

Chorus

And there's a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we'll take a deep draught of good-will
For long, long ago.

Chorus

MLK Day

 Today we are given a day off from school in remembrance of a great American who tirelessly worked to make our nation better.  Did you know that today is actually a national day of service?  Instead of sitting around, get out and help your community and your neighbors by volunteering!

Here are a few inspirational quotes from Dr. King:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it."

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

"Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him."

Holiday Break

We are now officially on holiday break!  The class before break, however, we took an exam for the first half of class then we made American flag ornaments...my gift to the students!  Here is a video of our little craft session:

Gratitude Cards

Before we left for Thanksgiving break I asked my students to write down things for which they are grateful.  Then we posted them on the bulletin board in our classroom.  Here's what they said:

I'd like to thank my mom, Helene, for always being so willing to help me out with all my crazy school projects including printing the gratitude cards and allowing me to make tons of color photocopies for the children's books with her awesome office photocopier and premium cardstock!

Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day!  We have just finished with our women's history unit of study and I just came across this great article featuring women who have served in our armed services throughout American history. Here is a link to this very interesting, and topical, slideshow.
